I had no idea what time it was, but I could see the sun peeking in through the window. I didnât think Iâd gotten ten minutes of quality sleep. Thoughts of Vic played in my head and how stupid Iâd been not to push her away. Iâd seen her coming, and I recognized that look in her eye, although Iâd never seen it directed at me before. But my body froze, and my mind fled. I stood there like a puppet on a string.
Getting up, I raised my arms above my head and stood on my tiptoes to get a full-body stretch. I was short, but the couch offered little room to spread out. As I was doing my unorthodox yoga pose, Hazel entered the living room.
Seeing me in this stance must have tickled her because she grabbed her side laughing. I immediately relaxed my body, and I felt better just hearing that sound. She looked much more at ease, and her body language comforted me.
âWhat are you doing? Trying to scare away those bears you warned me about?â
Now I was laughing, thinking back to that first day weâd met all those years ago. The fondness in her tone made me think sleep was the trick, and she was ready to listen.
âIf you recall, I said there were no bears.â
She chuckled. âThatâs true. But just so weâre both clear, you had no idea that it was.â
âMaybe not. But did that matter?â
Now she looked at me differently, and I wasnât sure what had changed.
âDid you know?â Her face was sad, and the lightheartedness was gone.
âNo. But I knew you could tell I was full of shit. It was my first job. Of course, I wasââ
âRoar. You know what Iâm asking. Did you know Vic was in love with you?â
I honestly didnât know she was asking that, but it explained the mood change.
âYou want to sit?â I reached out my hand, and, to my surprise, she let me lead her to the couch. âPlease believe me when I say that I had no idea. Weâve been friends for years, and never once did she tell me she had feelings for me.â
Staring at me like she was trying to figure something out, she finally said, âBut, Rory, you know things that people donât say. Youâre telling me you didnât pick up anything from her?â
I thought back to when Vic and I met to see if my perspective had changed, knowing what I know now. To me, it seemed apparent we both felt the same way about relationships. After our first day of work, we were at a bar drinking, and she said to me, âCheers to having the freedom to find what weâre looking for.â And I responded with, âAnd the wisdom to know what we donât wantâsomething serious.â We clinked our glasses together, which was the start of our friendship.
Replaying all our times together, I remembered her hugging me and holding my hand, but at the same time, she was always my wing-woman, so nothing seemed off.
